Satyanarayan Vrat

What is the Satyanarayan Vrat?

The Satyanarayan Vrat is the puja of Lord Vishnu as Satyanarayan, the Lord of Truth, kept with a fast on Purnima (the full moon). The family gathers to hear the Satyanarayan Katha, the five chapters telling how sincere observance of the vrat brought well-being to those who kept it and hardship to those who forgot their vow. The puja is also done to give thanks at weddings, housewarmings and other milestones.

Which day is it kept?

Satyanarayan Puja is kept on the day Purnima prevails at midday. This can be a day earlier than the Purnima listed for bathing and charity, which is the day Purnima prevails at sunrise. The dates on this page are for your location.

How the puja is done

The fast runs from the morning until the puja, usually in the evening. An altar is set up with an image of Satyanarayan, a kalash, banana leaves and tulsi, and Ganesha and the Navagrahas are worshipped first. After the Katha and aarti, the prasad of sheera (sooji halwa with banana) or panjiri and panchamrit is shared, and the fast is broken.
